My 6 Favorite Travel Themed Movies

If you’ve ever felt inspiration from reading a book or watching a movie, that is proof of how the human brain can be swayed by things one sees, hears or reads.

Entertained and inspired, is exactly what the filmmakers are hoping for you. Some movies send a message through storytelling, while others just want you to take you away for a while, far away from your everyday routines.

If you’re like me, and want to see the whole wide world, some films on this list may help bring you closer to your travel dreams. Popcorn then passport required.

“This is a good sign, having a broken heart. It means we have tried for something.”

Eat Pray Love (2010)

Italy, India & Indonesia

Iconic and life changing for many, this one is so dear to my heart I took it literally and did my version of this very quest in 2015… but that’s for another blog. Though the movie didn’t receive critical acclaim, what do they know anyway? Starring Julia Roberts as Liz and Javier Bardem as the love interest, this film beautifully showcases scenes of the countries Liz traveled to on her search for life’s big answers .  I went to meet Liz in 2016 at a conference in Phoenix and brought my tear stained book for her to sign. Turns out, she wasn’t doing signings because she was in the middle of caring for her wife, Raya. So, a friend in our group suggested to the conference leaders for Liz to pre-sign copies of EPL that we can buy in the bookstore, which she did. Thank you Liz for your words and messages of inspiration you continue to share with the world.

“Friday night and the lights are low”

Mama Mia (2008)

Who doesn’t love Meryl Streep as Donna? Inspired wholly from ABBA songs, this one is just plain fun to watch. The storyline follows Donna’s daughter trying to discover the identity of her true father, so she secretly invites her mother’s former lovers to her wedding. Filmed on location in Greece, the movie also features Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan,  Christine Baranski  and Colin Firth . One day I am going to find that church on the hill where the wedding scene takes place, and that’s a promise.

“Today is the last day that we will ever be this young.”

New Orleans

You can travel the world and hope to have as much fun as the women in Girls Trip do. After a long time apart, four best friends reunite and really let their hair down. Certified fresh at 91% on the tomatometer, watch this one when you need to laugh. Then immediately call your squad to plan your next  girl’s trip. Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall & Tiffany Haddish.

“The person who risks nothing, does nothing. Has nothing.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)

You can almost feel India by watching this film. An inspiring piece about hope and the mantra of you’re never too old to try something new, I hope you fall in love with the characters like I did.  The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel shows a group of retirees who travel to India to live out their days at what they thought would be a luxurious hotel. What they find will charm you in unexpected ways. It’s full of great actors including Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, and Maggie Smith.

“I know that when he died, his eyes were closed and his heart was open. And I’m pretty sure he was happy with his final resting place, because he was buried on the mountain. And that was against the law.”

The Bucket List (2007)

Get out there and live your life. Be happy and make sure you leave this earth with no regrets. The Bucket List is a tearjerker, and more importantly, a film with an important message hoping to inspire you to do all the things that you want to do while you still can.  Watch Jack and Morgan check off things like skydiving, visit the Taj Mahal, sit on the pyramids and witness something truly majestic. Classic.

Thelma:” I don’t ever remember feeling this awake.”

Thelma & Louise (1991)

Arkansas Road Trip

Starring Geena Davis as Thelma and Susan Sarandon as Louise, the storyline is born out of the kinds of things that drive women crazy in real life. The kind of things that women face and were expected to stay quiet about, but not these two. Watch as these best friends set out on a fun road trip that quickly spins out of control. The spirit of the film about women deciding to take matters into their own hands make this film relevant and timeless. Check out the added bonus for the breakout role of Brad Pitt as JD.
